Anecdote:
Sometime after Filbert's birth, May and Frank Dutra were divorced. It is unknown why May did not retain custody of Filbert but he stayed living with his father, Frank Dutra. Frank remarried and had another son by the second wife. Filbert was not happy at home and not close to his father, so he went to live with his grandfather Dutra and was then raised by his uncles Joe and Manuel Dutra whom he was very close to.

Filbert had a relationship with his mother in later years. She eventually married a Mr. Quinlan and they lived for a time in the Alviso District, close to Centerville. She went by the name of Mary Quinlan then and would go to her son's house to visit and play cards. Filbert's wife, Josie, referred to Mary as a "wonderful woman". She was nearly blind in her later years.

Sometime before her death in 1961, May, aka Mary, married Edmund Smith.

'Last week, Thursday morning, at about eight o'clock, the people of our town were startled by the report that Mr. S. W. Winger was found dead in bed. A coroner's inquest was held, and the jury decided that he died of heart disease. Mr. Winger was fifty-four years old and a consistent member of the M. E. Church, at his death, and a good citizen, esteemed by all. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R. M. Kiernan assisted by Rev. Linder and Dickey, on Sabbath morning at eleven o'clock. The funeral was the largest ever held in Schaller.' From the same source: 'Coroner Brown was summoned to Schaller last Thursday to investigate the death of Mr. S. W. Winger, who died suddenly.
